Twenty thousand fans in the Verizon Center took part in Polish Heritage Night during the Washington Wizards winning game over the New Orleans Pelicans.

On Saturday, February 4, for the fourth year in a row, the Polish Embassy co-organized Polish Heritage Night with the Washington Wizards, the largest Polish celebration in the NBA.

The evening’s special guest was Julian Kulski, a Warsaw Uprising veteran living in the United States who was honored by Marcin Gortat and Minister Krzysztof Szczerski, Secretary of State in the Presidential Chancellery who was visiting the US Capital. The assembled fans were also addressed by the President of the Republic of Poland Andrzej Duda via a recorded address, “It is not important where we live, who we work for, or what language we speak. What’s most important is that we consider ourselves Polish and we are proud of it” declared President Duda.

As has become tradition, Polish veterans and wounded warriors who served in Iraq and Afghanistan were invited to the game by Marcin Gortat and honored: Janusz Raczy and Andrzej Sinkiewicz as well as Natalia Ambrozinski, widow of Daniel Ambrozinski, who was killed in Afghanistan. Among the special guests this year were also actress Alicja Bachleda-Curus and UFC Champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk.

Thanks to the cooperation of the Embassy with Marcin Gortat, his MG13 Foundation and the Washington Wizards, the entire Verizon Center arena was white & red during Polish Heritage Night. A special surprise was prepared for two students of H.D. Cooke elementary school, which is partnered with our Embassy through the Embassy Adoption Program. Thanks to the support for the MG13 Foundation, the Polish Embassy in Washington, DC and the US Embassy in Warsaw two students will participate this summer in Marcin Gortat’s Basketball Camp in Lodz and also visit Warsaw.

On the eve of Polish Heritage Night, Ambassador Piotr Wilczek hosted guests at his residence included players and staff members of the Washington Wizards, representatives of the diplomatic corps, as well as members of the US and Polish media and all organizations involved in the annual Polish Heritage Night undertaking.

One of the main guests of the evening was CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, who conducted an interview Marcin Gortat. The Polish NBA star promotes an active lifestyle as well as knowledge about his homeland – Poland. The Polish Embassy in Washington, DC is proud that it could once again take part in this mission and support Marcin Gortat and his MG13 Foundation.
